Canal City Hakata
Opened in 1996 in Fukuoka, Canal City Hakata brings together 250 shops, restaurants, a cinema and musical fountains across 235,000 m² on the banks of the Naka River.
Canal City Hakata is a shopping and entertainment complex located in Fukuoka, facing the Naka River, near the Nakasu nightlife district. Opened in 1996 under the slogan "A city within a city", it brings together more than 250 shops, restaurants, a cinema and a hotel across 235,000 m² of floor space, organized around an artificial waterway that gives the site its name.
Why visit Canal City Hakata
Canal City is one of Fukuoka's urban landmarks. Its flowing silhouette, colorful facades and central canal make it a striking example of Japanese commercial architecture from the 1990s, designed by American firm Jon Jerde. Beyond shopping, the site functions as a genuine urban living space: fountain shows, live entertainment, restaurants and cinema coexist within the same complex. For visitors, it's a convenient way to combine shopping, meals and entertainment over a few hours without leaving the city center.
History
In the late 1980s, Fukuoka experienced rapid population growth while its traditional shopping districts began to lose momentum. The Canal City Hakata project was designed to revitalize this part of the city by combining nature, modern architecture and mixed uses. It became one of the largest private projects in Japan's history.
Opened in 1996, the complex attracted over 16 million visitors in its first year and generated more than 500 million dollars in revenue, results that also benefited neighboring shopping galleries through increased foot traffic. In 1997, Fukuoka was awarded "Best City in Asia" by Asiaweek magazine, a distinction in which Canal City played an important role.
What to see and do
The canal and central plaza
Past the main entrance, opposite Seiryu Park, the paved walkway opens onto the central plaza at the foot of the complex's curved stories and the Canal City Washington Hotel. The artificial waterway winds between terraces and gardens. The Sun Plaza stage regularly hosts shows, including fountains synchronized with 3D projections lasting around 30 minutes, several times a day at dusk.
The shops
The complex brings together Japanese and international brands across multiple levels:
- La Festa space for unique items beyond major brands;
- Vintage candy shops, instant noodle shops and the official Studio Ghibli store;
- Opa center dedicated to fashion (Diesel, Adidas, Armani Exchange and others);
- Floors devoted to men's fashion, sports and a Disney Store;
- Large toy store for families.
The East zone, more recent, includes notably H&M and Uniqlo, as well as bars and restaurants.
Entertainment and dining
The 4th floor houses an IMAX cinema and the Taito Station arcade hall, dedicated to video games and claw machines. On the 5th floor, the Ramen Stadium brings together several counters representing different regions of Japan, a great opportunity to compare broth styles in one place.

- Shows: fountains at the Sun Plaza stage occur at regular intervals throughout the day, with a more impressive effect at nightfall thanks to 3D projections.
When to visit
Canal City can be visited year-round, with most of the complex being covered. The busiest periods correspond to year-end holidays, with special illuminations from November through early January, and the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in July, which animates the neighboring area. The cherry blossom season in March-April and autumn (October-November) remain the best times to combine a visit with broader exploration of Fukuoka.
How to get there
Canal City Hakata is about 5 minutes walk from Gion metro station and approximately 15 minutes from Hakata and Tenjin stations. A loop bus service also serves the area.
To reach Fukuoka:
- From Tokyo, the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen reaches Hakata Station in approximately 4 hours 50 minutes;
- From Osaka, allow about 2 hours 20 minutes by Shinkansen to Hakata;
- Domestic flights connect Haneda (Tokyo) and Itami (Osaka) to Fukuoka Airport, which is particularly close to the city center.
What to see nearby
Canal City works well for a day combining shopping and discovery of the Hakata district: Tōchō-ji and Kushida-jinja temples, Kawabata shopping gallery, and the Nakasu district for its nightlife atmosphere and yatai (street stalls). To continue exploring Japan, you can also turn to other natural features and cultural sites in the country, such as Mount Inasa in Nagasaki, Mount Kōya and its monasteries, Mount Hiei near Kyoto, or Mount Tsukuba in the Kantō region.
