Mount Norikura

·

A 3,026 m peak in Japan's Northern Alps, Mount Norikura is reached by bus from Tatami-daira: hiking, skiing, snow wall and hot springs await.

Mount Norikura rises with eight peaks at the border of Gifu and Nagano prefectures, in Japan's Northern Alps. With a summit reaching 3,026 m, it ranks among Japan's ten highest mountains and welcomes hikers, skiers and hot spring enthusiasts within Chubu Sangaku National Park.

Why visit Mount Norikura

Norikura combines rare accessibility for a summit of this altitude with year-round activities. The Tatami-daira plateau, reached by bus at 2,700 m, serves as the starting point to reach the summit in 1.5 hours of walking, without technical gear. The mountain is known for its persistent snow that enables summer skiing, its snow wall passable in spring, and hot springs at lower elevations. With private vehicles banned on high-altitude roads, the site remains sheltered from mass tourism.

History of Mount Norikura

The first documented ascent dates to 1680, when Buddhist monk and poet Enku reached the summit. In 1878, English mining engineer William Gowland, considered the "father of Japanese archaeology," became the first foreigner to successfully climb it. Missionary and alpinist Walter Weston repeated the feat in 1892, helping make Japan's Alps known to the West.

The area was incorporated into Chubu Sangaku National Park in December 1934. In 1973, the opening of the Norikura Skyline, considered Japan's highest road, transformed access to the massif by facilitating ascent from the valleys.

What to see and do

Tatami-daira and the summit ascent

The Tatami-daira plateau at 2,700 m altitude welcomes remarkable alpine wildflowers in season. From this base, allow about 1.5 hours of walking to reach the main summit. The trails also lend themselves to shorter loops or descent to Norikura Kogen via an 18 km route leading to the tourist office.

Zengoro Falls and Ushidome Pond

Around Norikura Kogen village, two sites merit a detour. Zengoro Falls measures over 20 m in height and 10 m in width; frozen in winter, it forms an ice wall. Ushidome Pond offers a view of the massif reflected in its calm waters.

The snow wall

In spring, the road's snow clearing reveals a corridor between two snow walls reaching 10 m high. Less crowded than Tateyama's, Norikura's snow wall can be walked through peacefully. A shuttle bus from Norikura Kogen takes this route before continuing to Tatami-daira.

Skiing and sporting events

Between 1,500 m and 2,000 m altitude, Norikura Ski Resort offers 22 slopes and 11 lifts, open from early December to April. The domain caters mainly to beginner and intermediate skiers, with a dedicated children's area.

Summer hosts the Sky Marathon, an altitude race with a course climbing to 2,700 m. In late August, a cycling race follows the Norikura Skyline over 20.5 km with a 1,260 m elevation gain.

Yukemurikan hot springs

At the mountain's base, Yukemurikan onsen offer milky water from a source shared with the renowned Shirahone Onsen, known for its mineral properties. A natural stop after a day of hiking.
