West of Kyoto, the Tôei Uzumasa Eigamura park blends an active filming studio with a life-size recreation of the Edo period across 5.3 hectares.

The Tôei Uzumasa Eigamura, also called Tôei Kyoto Studio Park, occupies the western edge of Kyoto, in the Uzumasa district. This theme park combines an active filming studio with a full-scale recreation of the Edo period (1603–1868). Spanning 5.3 hectares, visitors wander through wooden merchant streets, tea houses, bridges, and samurai residences that serve as sets for period films and Japanese television series.

Why Visit Eigamura

Eigamura offers an unparalleled immersion in feudal Japan within Kyoto. More than 200 film productions have been shot here, including numerous jidaigeki (Japanese historical films), and film crews sometimes cross paths with visitors during the day. Access to the actual professional studios, located near the park, is restricted to the public, but outdoor sets remain accessible year-round.

The site appeals to both families and Asian cinema enthusiasts. A program called edutainment (a blend of education and entertainment) allows children to discover martial arts, traditional crafts, and calligraphy. Adults can enjoy ninja shows and Japanese sword-handling lessons.

Park History

The park opened its doors in November 1975, under the initiative of the Tôei Company, one of Japan's oldest film studios and still its owner.
