Before setting off on a journey, it's always wise to research the climate, the distribution of seasons throughout the year, and the intensity of weather conditions. To help you make your choice and know the best time to travel to Japan, we attempt to provide you with some key insights and answers:

The Different Seasons

There are four distinct seasons in the year:

Summer

Best Season to Visit Japan

Japan experiences three months of summer, from June to August, when heat comes with abundant rainfall. Temperatures average around 18oC in June, but rise to 22oC in August, the hottest month. Yet this average masks geographical disparities. While the islands of Hokkaido and northern Honshu enjoy particularly pleasant warmth (18 to 20oC), the regions of Tokyo and Osaka as well as the small southern islands are veritable heat waves, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 35oC. It rains intensely in all regions during this summer period, except in the northern province of Hokkaido. Moderate inland, rainfall is more pronounced on the coasts. After the showers, typhoons take center stage in the latter part of summer.

Autumn

Autumn is the season typically chosen by tourists to visit Japan. By early September, rainfall is still heavy, but the weather turns milder, offering perfect climate conditions to enjoy the beaches and surrounding attractions. Traveling to Japan in autumn allows you to discover another unmissable spectacle: the turning of maple leaves! It's a sight that enchants both tourists and Japanese alike: from August onwards, maples begin to shed their foliage as daylight decreases and take on brilliant colors. In parks and gardens, the ground is carpeted with a vibrant red tapestry.

Winter

Japanese winter begins in November and ends in March. The severity and length of winters vary from one geographical region to another. It's relatively mild on the southern coastal islands, moderately cold in Tokyo and Kyoto, and pronounced in the northern prefectures. To give you an idea, temperatures rarely fall below 3oC in the capital, whereas in Hokkaido prefecture, it snows 130 days. Ski and mountaineering enthusiasts have a field day visiting Japan between December and March. Head to the renowned Sahoro and Niseko resorts. In early February, Hokkaido hosts an exciting activity that draws crowds of tourists: the Sapporo Snow Festival. On the program: snow sculptures, song contests, and dog sledding.

Spring

Best Season to Visit Japan

It runs from April to May: a prime period for tourism. Temperatures are very mild during this time of year: ranging from a minimum of 10oC in the far north of the archipelago to a maximum of 25oC in Okinawa. Walkers and photography enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy. The appeal of traveling to Japan in spring is intimately linked to the blooming of cherry blossoms (sakura). The first flowers open around late March, giving the trees romantic hues. Pale pink, golden yellow, and cream white alternate depending on the cherry variety. It's worth knowing that viewing cherry blossoms in bloom is a tradition dating back several centuries. It evokes the beauty of nature, the passage of time, and the fragility of earthly happiness. If you're considering seeing the sakuras, be sure to follow the bloom forecast calendar published by Japan's National Meteorological Office. Bloom dates are not the same across the country, with southern cherry trees generally flowering earlier. Apart from the sakuras, all tourist sites in the country are open during this period of the year.
