Oyako-don (親子丼) is a delightful Japanese dish. The name oyako-don is quite amusing, as it literally means "parent (oya) - child (ko) over rice (don)".
It features: fish (the "parent") and fish roe (called ikura イクラ, the "child"), served over a portion of rice (don 丼 or donburi, the term for a bowl of rice topped with other ingredients—meat, fish, and the like. Note that Japanese diners typically eat rice separately).
Sounds appetizing, doesn't it? But in reality, oyako-don can take on quite a different form… Don't see it yet? Come on… parent… child… Ah yes! It's egg and chicken, of course! And in this case, to avoid the age-old question of which comes first, the chicken and egg are combined with onions and soy sauce… Simply delicious!
