The History of Kurashiki

In the past, Kurashiki was caught in conflicts between the Taira and Minamoto clans, leading to the first riots in 1866. This was followed by several years of restoration during the Meiji period. The opening of Japan's first seaside resort in Sami in 1882, followed by Kurashiki Station, the production of school uniforms, the city's modernization, and the opening of the Ohara Museum sparked genuine economic growth. This momentum continued and was further boosted by the inauguration of the Shinkansen, Japan's high-speed rail network.

The most notable events take place from late February through mid-March. Called Kurashiki Hina Meguri, the streets fill with massive crowds displaying Hina dolls. This celebration is also known as the Girls' Festival.

As for the Tenryo summer festival, it occurs on the first Saturday after July 20th. Festivities begin with drum rolls, followed by other grand events. The evening concludes beautifully with a grand parade, celebrating the arrival of summer and the end of the rainy season.

For a quick, efficient, and safe journey, flying to Okayama is undeniably the smartest option. Promotional fares will always be within reach if you decide to take the plunge. Note that upon arrival, a shuttle will handle your transfer to Kurashiki, covering approximately 45 minutes. The fare is estimated at 1,130 JPY, equivalent to roughly €9.37.

There's also another way: train travel. Indeed, Kurashiki sits on the San'yo Main Line. Numerous railway lines serve several stops, but the best solution is to take the San'yo Shinkansen and then a local train from Okayama. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Limited express, Japan Rail Pass, or JR West can also provide their services.

Transportation in Kurashiki

In Kurashiki, two modes of transport rank highest in popularity and frequency.

The bus, an essential vehicle in the city, connects various regions, departing from JR Kurashiki, Kojima, and Shin-Kurashiki stations. All signage is written in Japanese. After taking your numbered ticket, you must first check the fare table displayed at the front of the bus and signal your next stop by pressing the "stop requested" button. Payment is made before you exit, and a box near the driver collects tickets and fares from each passenger.

Taxis, stationed near train stations, await prospective travelers, courteously offering their services. Fares typically range from 400 to 600 ¥ for the first kilometer. Tourism taxis with fixed routes are also available.

It's worthwhile to explore the city by choosing a private car. This is certainly the most convenient and beneficial option if you plan to organize a small circuit around town.
