Frequently asked questions
Ryoanji Temple is generally open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (March to November) and from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (December to February). It is advisable to check the official opening hours before your visit, especially on Japanese public holidays.
The entrance fee to visit Ryoanji Temple and its famous Zen garden is approximately 600 yen for adults. Discounted rates are available for children and school groups.
The Ryoanji rock garden (karesansui) is composed of 15 stones arranged in raked gravel. One of its mysterious characteristics is that it is impossible to see all 15 stones simultaneously from any single vantage point. The exact meaning intentionally remains open to interpretation, inviting meditation.
Ryoanji Temple is accessible from Kyoto Station by bus (lines 50 or 59, Ryoanji-mae stop) or from the Kitano-Hakubaicho tram station. It can also be easily combined with a visit to Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), located just a 10-minute walk away.
Ryoanji is magnificent in all seasons: spring offers cherry blossoms (late March - early April), and autumn offers vibrant maple colors (November). To avoid crowds, plan your visit early in the morning on a weekday.
