Choisir de voyager au Japon pour sa culture et ses traditions, c'est accepter une lecture lente d'un pays qui superpose les époques sans jamais les opposer. Un matin dans un temple de Kyoto, un après-midi dans une ruelle néon de Shibuya : le contraste fait partie du voyage.

Le Kansai reste la porte d'entrée la plus dense pour qui veut comprendre l'héritage impérial. Kyoto compte plus de 1 600 temples bouddhistes et 400 sanctuaires shinto, dont 17 sites classés à l'UNESCO depuis 1994. Nara, première capitale permanente en 710, abrite le Tōdai-ji et son Grand Bouddha de bronze de 15 mètres. Quant à Osaka, elle bascule vers une culture populaire née dans les comptoirs marchands de l'époque d'Edo.

  • Rencontre avec des artisans de Kanazawa : laque, feuille d'or, céramique Kutani
  • Spectacle de kabuki au théâtre Minamiza ou immersion dans un festival de quartier

Au-delà du Kansai, le Tohoku préserve des traditions rurales encore vivantes : danses Namahage, fêtes des moissons, villages de fermes à toits de chaume comme Ouchi-juku.
